FAQs
Q. Where did the name of the event come from?
A: Steve King has been a friend for 30 years. His contribution to the sport of running and triathlon as an athlete, an organizer and announcer has been nothing short of remarkable. His reputation worldwide is without reproach. As the Race Director of the event I wanted to honour Steve for his contribution and I didn’t want to do it as a memorial. I wanted Steve to know we honour him now and value his contribution. We also felt that the distance of the event was appropriate given Steve’s accomplishments as an ultra distance athlete in such events as Western States 100, Badwater, Ironman and Ultraman Canada.
Q. What is “Feed the Valley”?
A: Feed the Valley is the charity, which is run by our sponsor Valley First Credit Union. All monies raised for Feed the Valley go toward funding the food banks in the Thompson, Okanagan and Similkameen Region.
Q. What does the top fundraising team and Solo Athlete win?
A: The winning team and solo athlete will win a buffet breakfast on Sunday morning hosted by Steve King. We encourage you to make arrangements to stay over night to collect on your prize. You will get to talk with, ask questions and hear stories from Steve. This will be a unique opportunity to have Steve talk with you and your team in an intimate setting.
Q: Is there a minimum age to participate?
A: For safety we have set the minimum age as 16. Anyone under the age of 18 requires a parent or guardian signature on the waiver.
Q: Can we enter a team of 2 or 4 people, rather than 8?
A: Yes, in this first year we want this to be a fun event. Teams are allowed from 2 (minimum) to 8 (maximum). We want people to participate so our restriction on ages, genders and team make-up are very non restrictive.
Q. What is the date for this year’s Steve King 100km Classic?
A. Saturday, September 14, 2013
Q. Where are the results posted?
A. On this site. We will make them available as quickly as we can, following the conclusion of the event and they have been verified for accuracy.
Q. Whom do I contact about possible errors in the results?
A. Go to the Contact Us page and send us an email.
Q. I lost (found) something at the Event. Where can I find (return) it?
A. Lost and Found will be located in the finish line in Memorial Park, Summerland — please check with the volunteer at the Draw Prize table on Saturday. Alternatively please contact Steve at stevekingclassic@gmail.com.
Q. What if the garment I received does not fit me?
A. We may be able to exchange garment sizes on Saturday September 15 at Memorial Park in Summerland. Please see the volunteer at the Draw Prize table. Exchanges will only be possible if we have extra sizes left over.
Q. What is the 2013 souvenir garment? How does it fit?
A. That information is unavailable at this time.
Q. Can we purchase extra race garments?
A. No, we will only be bringing in enough garments to satisfy the athlete requirements.
Q. Why didn’t I receive a confirmation email after registering online?
A. If you gave a hotmail or yahoo address or have spam filters turned on, there is a possibility that the message was blocked. Other reasons may be general internet problems, high volume, worms, viruses, etc. To get a copy of the confirmation message please email stevekingclassic@gmail.com.
Q. What information is needed for the Team Race Plan? When and how do we submit it?
A. The running order, name, gender, age and garment size of each stage runner, plus correct captain’s name and email address. The plan must be submitted online by the team captain any time before midnight August 12, 2013.
Q. What if we did not submit our Team Race Plan online?
A. You must submit it at Packet Pick-up. Bring the information required (see question above) and be prepared to fill out a form which will be provided by the timing company specifically for your team.
Q. What time does the race start?
A. Ultra/ Solo athletes start at 6:00 am and Team/Relay athletes start at 7:00 am.
Q. Where can we park?
A. At the race start parking is adjacent to the start area. Once you complete the course and arrive in Summerland parking is available at the High School Parking Lot, Municipal Parking Lots and for the early arrivals parking is available around certain parts of Memorial Park. Summerland is a small community and parking is at a premium right at the park. You may need to use street parking and walk into the park.
Q. Can I bring my bike and cycle with my runner?
A. No, please leave your bike at home. The roads are open to the public, and we must limit the traffic we put on the roads. Additional cyclists will make it more difficult and dangerous for runners to pass each other and other road users. Any team seen pacing a runner on a bike, or otherwise providing assistance, will result in disqualification of the team.
Q. Our team can’t participate after all. Can we get a refund?
A. Sorry, all race fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable. This includes race cancellation due to any act of God or force majeure, including, without limitation, weather, fire, flood, strike, labour dispute, civil commotion, riot or threat, or similar cause beyond the control of the organizers.
Q. What is the contact info for the volunteer coordinator?
A. Email Lucy Ryan at stevekingclassic@gmail.com.
Q. On the web site it says the Post-Race Awards Party is for participants & volunteers only — how do family and friends get into the party, can they buy tickets?
A. Our Awards Party will be held in Memorial Park and will include live entertainment as well as pizza and assorted drinks (non-alcoholic). While we anticipate having enough for everyone we would ask that this not be considered your evening meal. Family and friends of the participants are welcome to attend and we would encourage them to do so. No tickets are sold for this event, however in lieu of that we encourage your family and friends to donate to the Feed the Valley charity fundraiser.
